BOYS ROOM REDO – PART TWO

Tell Love and Chocolate- Kids book wall

If you checked out yesterday’s post I showed some super awesome before and afters of the boys room decor and redo.  Now I am getting into the nitty gritty.  DIY’s, sources and how everything came to be.  I basically started with a few frames and the kids beds.  Since I live in an apartment, storage is pretty key.  Small spaces can be such a curse when it comes to toys, so I needed the room to have a lot of function to it too.
First DIY I worked on was the cars and trucks storage crates.  I got the idea from some shelves Emily Henderson made (I can not find the original blog post so here is an image from pinterest).  So dang cute, I LOVED the painted insides.  I bought all four crates from Joann Fabric store.  They are $10 each and with the 40% coupons it was a steal.  I also added some shelves to a couple so that they would hold more cars and trucks.  The shelves are from thin wood I bought at home depot, measured, cut to size and then nailed into place.  This was seriously my favorite storage system.  I felt like they both had so many large vehicles that they played with every day and just didn’t fit in the closet.  SO I needed some storage that was easy to access, looked good and was functional.  SO all in all if you have boys and too many cars this is the perfect solution.

Tell Love and Chocolate- Toy storage DIY

Tell Love and Chocolate- toy storage ideasWhen I first started putting the room together there was a LOT of orange and black ha ha and I sort of had a freak out about it and worried that I was creating a Halloween nightmare!  But then I added the bright splashes of yellow, teal and blue and it all came together.  I painted one frame but didn’t want to paint them all because frames can be expensive and who knows when I’ll change the rooms again.  So, a little washi tape can solve any problem.

I really really love children’s books, so I wanted to display them as I had before.  I wanted them to still be easy to see and grab.  Since I already had the shelves, the move wasn’t very hard.

Book Shelves from IKEA
Brown crate- I got from craigslist and put wheels on the bottom

The little chalk/ magnet board is an easy DIY.  I got the board from IKEA, painted it with black chalk board paint and then hang!  The kids love it, and I felt like it added another fun element to their room.  I hooked on some tiny buckets next to the chalk board to store chalk and extra magnets.

I love this. I love that it looks great even though it’s an apartment room. The cars/trucks yes they are everywhere- great idea on the crates. Washi tape is amazing.

Late to the game, but I LOVE how this room turned out! I’ll be working on my son’s room in next few months. I love seeing colorful non traditional boy bedrooms!
